Siberia Valley, South Island [2]

Another view of the Siberia Valley, this time looking upstream from a point further down-valley from yesterday's photo. The lens has reduced the apparent size of the mountains, but you should still get some impression of how lovely and spectacular this country is.

Lovely country, but too bad about the bugs. There are also so many lovely, remote places back home in northern Canada, but there as well -- the bugs! Paradise lost,or at least compromised. But at least there's always the DEET.

Paul, you have to be a bit philosophical about them. Maori legend has it that Fiordland (not far from here) was so beautiful the gods put sandflies there so it wouldn't be overrun by humans. From what I've heard (and seen, but not in person), the bugs in northern Canada are nightmarish, so perhaps they're there for the same reason ;^)

Watercats; Robb — I wish you could smell it. It's so clean and fresh, the way the world should smell. I guess this is another reminder of how the virtual, online world is such a poor representation of what's real.
