Spring evening?
I see an air of menace.
Perhaps it's lovely in colour, but it looks terrifying in black and white!

I think it looks gorgeous. The bright area on the ground draws the eye.

RR, I'd never seen it as terrifying, or anywhere near that, but now you point it out, I can see how it might have that effect. A hint of the eschatological, perhaps? ;^)

Zhoen — that's more in line with my intuitive reaction to what I saw.

Pete, this one doesn't quite work for me. The top half is gorgeous - there are those amazing clouds of yours - but the bottom half isn't. To me the light patches look artificial. When I looked at the image after reading the title, I was puzzled: I thought it was floodlighting at a sports stadium! Such intense light doesn't - to my eye - fit in with the rest of the image.

Anne-Marie, light like this isn't infrequent here, although I've noticed it more in late autumn than spring. It's the combination of low, late sun with heavy cloud; when the sunlight does find a gap to slip through, the result can be spectacular, particularly on strong topography like this. Still, if it looks wrong to you, I guess that's just how it is.

I'd be interested to see this photo in colour, may be that would seem less artificial.

Thanks Michael.

Come to think of it, have there been any shots of a cloudless, blue sky?

For me the sense of "menace" actually makes me want to head out across the hills right into the clouds!

(I love today's word verification: "rewrub"... echoes of Elmer Fudd?

Miguel, yes — 20 December 2008. And I sometimes feel that urge too ;^)
