These loading yards are further up the valley from my place, on the opposite (western) side of the river. That's the southern Ruahine Range mostly hidden by cloud in the background. I photographed this between showers of rain on a miserable day in Spring last year (2008).

All right, Pete, I've run out of adjectives. Think I'm going to start leaving a happy face or something from now on. Anyway, this may be a new favorite. Or one of them, anyway.
the mossy gate does it for me..a classic nz scene
wouldnt mind being up in that cloud amongst the leatherwood havin a brew as well
out of interest was it a spur of the moment shot or did u await the break in the day to rush out and snap away?

Emma — :^)
Tom: it would've been mighty damp up there — fun if you had a fly for shelter and nowhere to get to in a hurry.
At the time, I was driving around the valley checking out stopping points for an upcoming Photographic Society field trip. I knew this was a contender, and was lucky to get a minute or so of just a few spits of rain before it turned heavy and chased me back into the car. Ironically, the day of the field trip was brilliantly fine — nowhere near as good for photos.
Kia ora Pete,
If I had to choose a photo to describe New Zealand and the area in which I live I would pick this one. The thought of having a brew up in the cloud with Tom is a good one.
Cheers,
Robb
Cheers Robb. Looks as if Tom's got a little party going — three of us now :^)
How beautiful. I feel the coolness and dampness of the place just by looking at this photo. And there are more of your beautiful clouds :-)
Thanks Anne-Marie. It must be quite a contrast to South Australia right now. The met. people last night were forecasting 36°C for Adelaide today.
Hi Pete,
Great photograph! I am very impressed with it. It conveys the mood just right, and all the aspects of photography have been carried out perfectly. I think I would crop a little bit from the clouds at the top :)
Thanks Greg!
What everyone above said. If there is any image of NZ that I've seen that would really make my want to visit, this is the one. What an absolutely wonderful photo! I love the slightly brown and green hue of the clouds...
