Leaving Wellington harbour

Sailing past Pencarrow Head, the Rimutaka Range beyond.

In January I crossed Cook Strait to the South Island.

This landscape suits me well at the moment. Oh, for something raw and awe-inspiring and ... hmmm ... no-holds-barred. That's how it looks to me, anyway.

Beadbabe, unfortunately the city and its satellites are close by. What you see here is mostly rough scrubby farmland; it has a beauty of its own but certainly no substantial feel of remoteness. Sometimes, though, during the working week when most people are otherwise occupied, it's possible to bike out to Pencarrow Head and stand in the wind, maybe looking at the little lakes half hidden among the hills, maybe looking out to sea and watching the waves roll in to pound the shoreline rocks and shingle, maybe watching the birds or the feral goats, and to sense something of what it was, long ago. And maybe what it might become, again.
