Golden-breasted bunting, Pilanesberg

Golden-breasted buntings (Emberiza flaviventris) belong to the same genus as yellowhammers. However, the other animals with which they share their environments could hardly differ more: rhinos, giraffes, cheetahs and so on for this bunting (in Pilanesberg Game Reserve, South Africa); sheep, possums, rats, an occasional rabbit, etc. for the yellowhammers living here in the Pohangina Valley.

I appreciate the fact that the birds you photograph are so often watching you just as carefully as you are watching them. Some real encounters are recorded.

RR, I long ago gave up on trying to sneak up on birds. They always know where I am, and stalking makes them nervous. Much better to amble slowly, in full view, giving them time to reassure themselves I'm not a threat.

Zhoen, it definitely has that attitude. Very pert and dapper.
