Woman at Kileswar

Local woman, Kileswar
One of the local women who ran the Maharajah's retreat at Kileswar. During the course of a week, the local people seemed to relax and even enjoy having the strangers around. I felt honoured to receive smiles like these.

This woman has a great sense of humour - you can see it in her infectious smile. Her eyes are amazing. Such an unusual colour. She reminds me of the old kuia you see on marae some times.

Anne-Marie, yes, and there are some interesting parallels between their respective societies and their roles within them. As for her eye colour, I think in this photo it's actually the colour of the light reflected in her very dark, almost black, irises.
