Deer on my doorstep

I'd just eaten a couple of cherries—one of the great delights of summer in Aotearoa—and was thinking about Thingumy and Bob. Before the light faded completely, I stepped out the back door to enjoy the evening. The hill paddock, lit by the last sunlight, had turned orange-pink, and I saw several animals grazing there. I looked harder, then grabbed the binoculars. The animals were four wild red deer: three hinds and a fawn.

This time I grabbed the camera, and although they were a long way off, some careful photographing and cropping produced some pleasing photographs.

You must have one excellent telephoto there, Pete. How far distant were they - it does not look more than 200 metres in the image.

Avus, yes, the lens is very good, but the photograph has been heavily cropped, so the camera's sensor must take a lot of the credit. I did take great care with the focusing, and it's interesting to see how some photographs are just perceptibly softer than others. Judging distance is very difficult, but I'd guess they were well over 200 metres away — perhaps closer to 300.

You know, I thought I was the only person on the planet who can spend time thinking about characters in books in the same way I might think about my friends! It's a relief to know there are others....

Lisa, I think about characters in books like that often. And what characters are better to think about than Tove Jansson's.

Welcome home, BTW :-)
