Coot chick

At the Vet pond at Massey this morning, a pair of coots were being pestered by their two chicks. (And yes, I know, and I'm waiting for the wisecracks.)

Oh! I saw them last weekend - the cutest things! I had been planning to photograph them - but I'm so glad you did and gave them your Midas touch.

I'm puzzled though - why are there baby birds around at this time of the year?

Lisa, apparently coots often raise two broods a year, so these will be the second brood.

Barbara, that quotation really suits those patterns in the water. Thanks :-)

I've never seen coot chicks, even though we have many coots here. Such a lovely photo. At first I wasn't surprised to see this chick photo because it is spring and chick season here. Ah, not so there!

Robin, when they're younger, they're weird-looking little birds with spectacularly-coloured heads (red through orange to yellow). They're out of that stage now — probably a good thing as we're heading into winter.
