Clematis time in the Ruahine

Many of New Zealand's native flowers are small and nondescript, even though they have their own kind of restrained beauty. A few, though, are eye-catching, like the native Clematis, which flowers profusely at this time of year in the Ruahine.

Kia ora Pete...as if it is time to take a few deep breaths. Even show off a little. Looking forward to getting up there very soon.

Kia ora Robb. Don't leave it too long — the peak of Clematis flowering seems to have passed now, and although it'll carry on for a while yet, it won't get any more spectacular.

Unbelievably gorgeous, Pete, at least to me.

Glad you like it, Beth :-)
What isn't clear from this photograph is the way these flowers occur in large clusters, draped over trees and shrubs. It's spectacular.

I think I may have seen this one up No1 line last weekend.

Jono, you'd certainly have seen this cluster, and probably this flower. It's low down and almost literally in-your-face.

Good to see you both :-)
