It's that time of year again, when mayfly adults start appearing on the walls and windows. This is a male sub-imago (the adult stage before the final moult into the full adult form); it's probably
Deleatidium autumnale. This is a hand-held photograph at ISO 1600 with natural light (no flash); the insect was facing upwards on the excessively grubby kitchen window. (I've rotated the photograph.)

What a marvellous portrait, and how I long to see mayflies again....but they would have to break through the ice.
I've seen (literally) 100s of these over the last few days, mostly on the walls of the buildings at work.
Thank you, RR. That ice sure is tough on them mayflies. It's tough on the uninsulated like me, too ;-)
Andrew, I guess they're pretty thick on the walls at Massey then, also. I've been away for a few days, but last time I was there I saw a few starting to appear. I suppose their abundance suggests Turitea Stream's in reasonable shape.
So looks like a studio photo, with make-up people just outside the shot.
Seems the secret of my mayfly photographs is out. ;-)
