Early morning near Ngamoko hut

Where the ridge meets the river, early morning sun lights red beech trees — some old, even dead; some still only saplings. One never steps twice in the same river, Heraclitus said; he might have added one never visits the same valley.

Oh, this one has a soaring feeling ... and I wanted to thank you for recommending Rebecca Solnit's "A Field Guide to Getting Lost" ... I've just begun it and I'm enjoying the journey ;0

P.S. One never wakes twice to the same morning! (Not even when one dozes off again and wakes up a bit later.)

Barbara, I'm glad you're enjoying the book. I certainly did.

Thanks Brenda. It was a wonderful morning; hard to believe it was over a fortnight ago. I must get back there soon.

RR, actually, I have thought about adding sound. Might look into it. (I agree, too, about not waking twice to the same morning!)

Kia ora Pete,
Those epiphytes are in ways the essence of the valley floor forest, (and look incredible in that light. On a recent solo trip the words of Heraclitus were echoing all around me as I walked down the valley. It looked much the same but I could feel it was different.
Cheers,
Robb

Kia ora e hoa. Your mention of walking down the valley reminded me of that lovely journey down from Kinvig to Ngamoko — the kind of walk where I feel torn between wanting to linger and wanting to see what's around that next bend (A whio? A deer? Something even more wondrous — or just spectacular light?). Too cold in the river now, though.
