Near an open-fronted stall that sold colas and food, birds of several species scampered about, gleaning morsels from the ground. I managed to photograph a couple, and I'm fairly sure this is a Bar-winged Cinclodes (Cinclodes fuscus), typical of the páramo grasslands.

Perfectly focussed, Pete. Do you use any form of steady at 300mm? I cannot image you had time or space for a tripod.
Avus, the 100–300mm (the equivalent of 200–600mm on a full-frame 35 mm sensor) includes image stabilisation. It's good, but not as good as that on the Canon 300mm (which I longed for, particularly on the jungle trip). But the big Canon and a tripod were out of the question for this trip.
