Mayfly (Coloburiscus humeralis?)

Last night was one of the warmest we've had this spring, and by the time I'd started to think about going to bed the kitchen windows were covered in insects (mostly moths) trying to reach the light. But moths weren't the only insects attracted to the light. This morning I found this gorgeous mayfly on the verandah rail. I'm fairly confident this is Coloburiscus humeralis, but if you think this is wrong, please let me know.

  1. How amazing!
The wings are stained glass windows with light inside. However did you capture that?

  2. RR, it was fortuitous. I found it on the railing and grabbed the camera and macro lens. Very simple and straightforward. I only managed three shots before it flew off.

  3. My goodness, Pete! This is amazing! Yes, RR, it is like a stained glass window.

Pete, we've just visited Jericho where "Snowflake Bentley" was the first person to photograph snowflakes - they too are entrancing.

  4. Thanks Lisa. I hadn't heard of 'Snowflake Bentley', so did some quick investigating. I was amused by the comment by a snowflake expert that despite the limitations of his equipment '...he did it so well that hardly anybody bothered to photograph snowflakes for almost 100 years.' :^D

    Sorry. Old joke.
