He's a huntaway, a working dog. His name is Ugg — incomprehensibly, a contraction of Ugly. He's big, strong, loud (as huntaways must be), and wonderfully gentle. I like him a lot.

You are right. There is nothing ugly in the way that dog looks. Perhaps you could think about it as a contraction of Ugh, and say that he is as warm and gentle as an Ugh boot.
ReplyDeleteKia ora Pete,
ReplyDeleteTara thought this described me as well :) I'll take it as a compliment over the acrocerid!
Cheers,
Robb
Not at all ugly - you have really caught those wise and knowing eyes.
ReplyDelete(I see word verification is "dograbl" - how spooky is that!
Dog needs a new name. He's gorgeous. Cole, perhaps.
ReplyDeleteTook us a week to rename Moby, as he'd been given the generic for a black cat - "Midnight."
Elephant's Child, that's a much better way to think of him. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteRobb, I think Tara might have got it right this time ;^)
Avus, you'd like him a lot, too. He seems more self-assured than the other dogs, in a gentle yet confident way.
Zhoen, I find it impossible to think of Moby as anything other than Moby. Great choice. I'm curious, too — any particular reason for Cole? Suits him, but I doubt I could teach him this new trick.
I think this is one of the most stunning animal portraits I've seen - awesome. Ugg's coloring reminds me of our dear departed Oscar, a Brindle Boxer. Oh, he was a sweetheart.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Barbara. (•‿•)
ReplyDeletePete,
ReplyDeleteOh, dogs get used to new names quite easily. Cole because he seemed to have an ancient and kingly mien. Old King Cole. He doesn't quite look like an Arthur, though.
Ah, I see. I wondered if it might have been after Cole Porter, because of his (Ugg's) musical howling ;^)
