The poplars in Te Awaoteatua stream have taken a battering during the last two winters and some didn’t survive. Will these still be here this time next year?
I was up in the valley yesterday and was surprised to see just how much had changed, as far as the waterways go, since I was last there. Several of the streams looked rather eroded and while the water in the river at Totara Reserve looked clean enough, the algae growth suggests high nutrient levels even there. It didn't help that there had obviously been some roadworks and re-sealing I imagine (I certainly didn't enjoy those bits with loose gravel, on the motorcycle).
Andrew, the streams around here get plenty of runoff, and sometimes direct aerial fertilisation, so I'd be surprised if the nutrient levels weren't high. The resealing's very recent, too — just last week. I imagine it would've felt rather unpleasant on a bike. When they re-marked the road they swept the shingle off the centre but left it in the lanes... with luck they might come back and sweep it thoroughly. On the other hand, they might not be bothered...
There's a classic movie feel to this photograph that I love... I keep waiting for Errol Flynn or Marlene Dietrich to step out from behind the tree.
ReplyDeleteMiguel, now that I'd have loved to photograph ;^)
