When the Southern Alps look like this, stay indoors. Read a book or admire the wildness from somewhere snug and safe. Whatever you do, don't attempt to cross rivers.
The road to Mt Cook village follows that left-hand (western) shore of Lake Pukaki.

This photo really looks like a painting... and a good one! Did you shoot it in black and white, or these were the actual colors ?
ReplyDeleteDramatic picture and warning.
ReplyDeleteYour photos and writings from faraway places are one of my favotite places to check on the net.
Awe.
ReplyDeleteBest enjoyed in photos, with a hot cup of tea. Well, your photos anyway.
Greg, photographed in colour and converted to monochrome (B&W with a slight tint). Lake Pukaki is notable for being almost turquoise (depending on the light), but on this day the colours appeared a little muddy. I prefer the monochrome.
ReplyDeleteMats, thanks :^) Weather like this kills people in our mountains every year — the rivers rise rapidly and someone decides to try crossing.
Thanks Zhoen :^) Mmm... tea. The weather couldn't be more different here today, but I still think I'll have another cup.
Kia ora Pete,
ReplyDeleteI have never seen such a scene down south, but certainly has a familiar look to it! Love this photo Pete, so suits the mono.
I am heading down south with Tara in mid December and hoping to visit this area. This has me very excited.
Cheers,
Robb
It's big country, Robb, with a very different feel from the Ruahine. Hope you'll have better weather than this, though ;^)
