Korimako (New Zealand bellbird)

Sometimes you have to persevere to make a photograph; sometimes you get lucky. This was the only photograph I managed of this male korimako — a quick shot through a gap in a tangle of branches — and it's one of the better photographs I've managed of these beautiful, frustrating birds.

  1. Excellent image, Pete. I loved hearing their melodious calls when I was in NZ.

  2. The colors, the detail - it's so gorgeous. It's a lovely image for an overheated time (and that is putting it mildly, I think.). Thanks, Pete.

  4. Thanks Avus. I'm always astonished at how loud a small bird like this can be, but when the call is this melodious (as you say), I can't say I mind!

Barbara, thank you, and that's a good point.

Thank you, Robin. I'm quite pleased with it :-)

Zhoen, that bill is beautifully adapted for extracting nectar from some of our native flowers, particularly harakeke (NZ flax).
