I've mentioned the No. 1 Line track so often now, I thought I should show you the top seat. I walked up there again today, brewed tea (that's it on the seat) and scribbled a few notes. The shrub's a horopito — mountain pepperwood (
Pseudowintera colorata) — one of the most abundant shrubs in this altitudinal zone. The weather's pretty typical, too.

It looks delightful, Pete and the sort of thing which so appeals to me although walking far, these days, is no longer possible. But I do similar on my ebike.
ReplyDeleteHow do you brew your tea - take a hot flask of water or a spirit stove?
P.S I have been meaning to ask; "No. 1 Line track " to what does the name refer and why?
ReplyDeleteKia Ora Pete...a pleasure to sit in that seat. I feel a twinge of homesickness looking at it but delight in knowing it will be there.

Avus, I use a very light spirits burner; it came with the Caldera Cone system, which is essentially a light aluminium windshield that supports the titanium pot. The burner looks to have been made from an aluminium beer can, so it weighs almost nothing. The system's excellent and works well even in windy conditions. A thermos flask wouldn't let me brew tea to my finicky standards ;-)
ReplyDeleteNot sure about the origin of the name, but the other side roads are, naturally, No. 4 Line, No. 3 Line, and No. 2 Line. Probably just a surveyor with a lack of imagination.
Kia ora Robb. It'll be there, waiting for you, when you return. :-)
A place to meet all sorts of people from all over the world and from all time.
ReplyDeleteZhoen, you're right — I've met all sorts of people up there. Overwhelmingly a pleasure to meet, too.
