Ruapehu from No. 1 Line

Towards evening, I left the No. 1 Line car park. After closing the gate I turned the car off and took some time to study the view. Beyond the pines, beyond the darkening valley, far off in the last sunlight, Ruapehu crouched. Ngauruhoe's summit peered just above the horizon.

  1. Dramatic and threatening. I appreciate the use of the word 'crouched' for the volcano.

  2. RR, Ruapehu's very much an active volcano, and I've seen it erupting. For now, it seems quiet, but one never knows.

  3. Kia ora Pete,
A peaceful and alluring scence, though the giant appears to be snoring...

  5. Kia ora Robb. Copying and pasting the link worked for me — thanks! I liked the comment at the end about the social media response ;-)

  6. I love this picture and the way it changes as you look at it. The first things you notice are the trees and the volcano. The next thing you notice is the stillness. And then the detail comes into view: the softness of the fields in the foreground, the smoke-like cloud between the mountains. I was reminded of Wordsworth on a quite different topic, "and all that mighty heart is lying still."

  7. Lisa, thank you for that wonderfully thoughtful comment. I have to wonder, too: if Wordsworth could write that in response to the view from Westminster Bridge, what would he have done with the view from No. 1 Line?

  8. Indeed - what a poem that would make!

Constructive criticism is welcomed (I particularly appreciate thoughts on what you like and don't like), but please keep it courteous.
