This is the wonderfully named Hound's tongue fern (
Microsorum pustulatum; kōwaowao); in the background you can see part of the lower section of the No. 1 Line track. I've lost count of the number of times I've walked this track, but I doubt I'll ever tire of it.

Kia ora Robb. This fern grows abundantly along the track, particularly lower down, and it's weathered the dry conditions much better than some of the other ferns.

ReplyDeleteLisa, the curious thing is that it always seems to look lush and green except where it's exposed to long periods of direct sunlight, when it yellows and burns. But, given reasonable shade, Hound's tongue seems able to extract ample moisture from even desiccated substrates. I find the sight comforting.
