I made it to the Galápagos. I'm on Santa Cruz, leaving for Isabela on Thursday. This place is wonderful — I might not leave ;^) It's the only place I've ever had a bird land on the lens of my camera (more about that later). I don't pick favourite animals, but I think I'm in love with these little iguanas. They're much smaller than I'd expected — a really big one might reach 50 cm but most are much smaller, and man, do they know how to relax! They find a nice spot, often in the middle of a footpath, and spread themselves out as if they've been dropped from the sky. I'm learning to watch where I walk.

'Don't tread on me' look. Gorgeous textures.
ReplyDeleteI think the mutual admiration shines through.
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful to know that there is still a place where creatures are not afraid of man.
It must feel like a dream come true, Pete. I know I've been dreaming of the Galapagos since I was about 6, so I've a feeling I know how you're feeling right now. Just to get the shot of the iguana must have thrilled you beyond words!
ReplyDeleteHave you seen any of the new hybrid iguanas yet? Or are they on another island?
By the way I noticed that you changed your camera. How are you liking the Lumix GH1? I've been looking at that recently, but unfortunately in Japan they don't sell it with an English menu.
I like this guy, a lot. Very no-nonsense, very refreshing. So very glad you're realizing a dream and sharing it with us. Yes!
ReplyDeleteZhoen, the textures are indeed wonderful and the temptation to try and touch them must be great for some people. Fortunately, I've not seen anyone try — the message about treating the animals respectfully, including not feeding them, seems to have got through.
ReplyDeleteRR, I wish more places were like this. New Zealand might have been similar a thousand years ago, and the native robins and a few other birds still hint at it.
Miguel — oh yes! Magic. I didn't think I could possibly afford it, but apart from the flights and the park entrance fee, it's no more expensive than the mainland. Of course, options for visiting are very restricted unless you sign up for a tour (very expensive) but there's plenty to see and do independently.
I believe the hybrid iguanas are only on one island so far (not sure which one). As for the GH1, I don't particularly like it and I miss the 'real' DSLR (20D with its wonderful lenses). As a travel camera, though, the GH1's excellent: small, light, and delivering excellent images. I detest the electronic viewfinder, the endlessly complex controls, the slow focusing with the 100–300 zoom, and the severely restricted macro capabilities.
Thanks Barbara — I like them a lot too!
I want that guy for President of the World!
ReplyDeleteLydia, he/she would probably do a better job than many of our so-called leaders. We might have a world where our environment and all its inhabitants is accorded its true value.
