Driftwood stump

The annual bouldering competition at Baring Head (eastern side of the entrance to Wellington harbour) took place on Saturday. A strong, cold southerly hadn't quite blown itself out and numbers seemed down a little, although that might have been partly because most of the Christchurch climbers hadn't come north, for obvious reasons. Still, the event ran smoothly and, as always, I found it delightfully social — the spirit at these competitions is wonderful. I'm working through my photos and will eventually post them on the Baring Head Bouldering blog, with a few here too. In the meantime here's one from the beach on the walk back to the car.

  1. Nice sky background, which ‘mirrors’ the shape of the driftwood (or vice versa). I think this helps to bring this photo together.

  2. Thanks Paul. I agree — while the pattern of the clouds is partly an artefact of the wide angle lens, I agree it works well here.

  3. Pete, so lovely to find this immediately after yet another THUD! Shake-and-Rattle. A calming sight for jangled nerves! The sunlight on that stump lifted my heart. The aftershocks yesterday and today are so close to us that we don't even get the warning rumble.

I, too, had been going to comment on the lines of the cloud and of the stump mirroring one another, but I see Paul beat me to it. (Well, I've commented on it anyway!)

It's good to have your photos to turn to just before going to bed. I save them until last.

  4. Lesley, thank you. Glad the photos bring some relief from hard times down there :^)
