Thunderclouds over the Pohangina Valley

The view up the valley, along the western flank of the southern Ruahine

Aotearoa's feeling the influence of a tropical depression at the moment, and for the last couple of days thunderstorms have been common over much of the country. I drove home this evening still feeling slightly queasy after having had to pay for a new CV joint and Warrant of Fitness for the car, but the sight of immense thunderclouds over the Ruahine Range and the head of the Pohangina took my mind off mere financial woes.

  1. Kia ora Pete,
This photo reminds me greatly of my original place, Wisconsin. Not the rising hills as it was very flat farmland for the most part. But on a hot and humid summer day, like the ones we have been having, you could depend on these big thunder heads rolling on in. The sound of thunder over these past few days had me smile. So does this photo.
    Cheers,
    Robb

  2. Sorry about your car trouble.

A great storm would be most welcome.

  3. Wow, how gorgeous! I love clouds like this. Clouds that demand attention.

And meanwhile, a mere 100km away, where I am, the weather is cooler and there's been no hint of thunderstorms.

  4. Robb, very pleased it reminded you of Wisconsin and made you smile :^)

Zhoen, it wasn't really trouble (but would have been if I'd kept putting off the repair). The unfortunate thing about these clouds is that they seem reluctant to deliver the actual storm, and thereby the relief from the oppressive heat and humidity.

Cheers Anne-Marie. It really is astonishing how weather like this can be so local.

  5. Makes me think of Sunday School. Not unfondly.

  6. Cheers Michael. Thunderstorms are less common in Aotearoa than many countries, particularly those with contintental or tropical climates, so for me they have no particular associations. Still get a buzz out of them, though.

Constructive criticism is welcomed (I particularly appreciate thoughts on what you like and don't like), but please keep it courteous.
