Another from the whio survey before Christmas. Mid-Pohangina hut sits in a small clearing on the river terrace on the right-hand side of the photo, to the right of those big, semi-silhouetted trees. I came across a pair of whio downstream from here; roughly halfway between the swingbridge and the Cattle Creek confluence. Beautiful birds in a beautiful place.

Kia ora Pete,
ReplyDeleteLovely. Isn't there a waterfall just out of sight on the true right? I feel this valley calling soon!
Cheers,
Robb
How strange it looks... the trees and mountains seem all ruffled, from a Japanese perspective.
ReplyDeleteKia ora Robb. Yes, the little waterfall's close to where the track to the hut leaves the river.
ReplyDeleteMiguel, the bush, particularly in the southern Ruahine, has been pretty badly knocked around by a complex of agents including introduced mammals, storms, and insects. The pines on the right hand side of the photo are a potentially serious weed; they were deliberately planted for erosion control but have self-seeded and will continue to invade if efforts to control them aren't kept up. In short, it's a sad picture.
